The Waterken Server is a web server and distributed app framework written in Joe-E, the object-capability subset of Java. It defines a distributed capability protocol in terms of JSON data sent over TLS, with cryptographic-capabilities (or web-keys) represented as https URLs.

The current major release of the Waterken server is version 4.x, described above. The 3.x version of the server used XML/XSLT in place of JSON/Javascript. CapWiki, a wiki with capability-based access control, was built on the 3.x version of the server. The wiki has not yet been ported to the 4.x release. The reference implementation of Horton is expressed in Waterken/Joe-E, for the 4.x version of the server.
