A powerbox is a component which mediates between the user and a program, interpreting the user's instructions to grant authorities to the program, and allowing the program to request authorities to be granted. It goes beyond a capability shell in that the program may request additional authorities after its initialization, via the powerbox.

CapDesk was the first program to contain a powerbox referred to as such.
